CHAPTER 29

I parked the truck a few houses down from mine, the engine continuing to steadily rumble as I peered through the windshield.

“I can’t tell if anyone is home.”

Let me connect to your smart home system, Tim said with a distracted voice before coming back. The coast is clear.

Putting the truck back into drive, I slowly drove down the street with my eyes trying to capture the entire area, searching for men with glowing fists and clad in fedoras.

I reversed onto the driveway while Tim lifted the garage door for me.

Wait!

I hit the brakes.

“What?!” I asked, my heart beating out of my chest as I jerked my eyes all around in search of the danger.

Your garage door is only seven feet tall.

“And?!” The truck is six and three quarters.

“Then it’ll fit?” I asked, letting my heart rate drop back to slightly above normal.

If you go slowly. But if you hit a bump, even a pebble, you’ll smack into the door.

“I don’t care,” I said as I continued backing into the empty spot where the family SUV usually sat, albeit with a careful watch on the accelerator.

Once inside, Tim closed the door, and I climbed out with fistfuls of bags.

“Wish you had told me about this Tannerite stuff before I decided to put twenty pounds of it in the cab with us,” I told him, referencing the seemingly countless scenarios that Tim and I had run through on our drive down from Fort Worth. “I honestly can’t believe this stuff is legal.”

You meat bags and your assortment of convoluted laws make me shudder, quite frankly. For example, did you know it’s illegal to run out of gas in Youngstown, Ohio? Or that you are not allowed to drive a black car on a Sunday in Denver, Colorado?

“But you can buy Tannerite . . . ”

To be fair, a lot of farmers use it to take out wild hogs that damage their fields and maim their livestock.

“How do they do that?”

Let me show you, Tim said with a mischievous smile in his voice. But first, get the Springfield out of the box. We need to start setting up.

The sun was fully set when we were done.

“Now what?”

Now . . . this, Tim spoke. Hold out your fist.

I pointed my left arm forward, and the Clepsydra began to glow a bluish light.

Okay, now carefully walk back to our nest.

Doing as he said, I slowly made my way outside with my arm continuing to point at the kitchen with ample windows around.

Once I made it to our hiding spot, I lay down flat and rested my left arm over one of the shot bags full of lead pellets.

And here . . . we . . .
